Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Fellow to join the established Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service (CESS) team at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of complex epilepsy management as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Radiologists, Neurophysiologists, Neuropsychiatrists, Psychologists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapists and Nurses.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital is one of the four nationally commissioned Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Services in the UK. The successful candidate will play a significant role in the day‑to‑day running of the CESS service, delivering high‑level patient care and acting as a vital conduit between various specialties including Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiology, and Neurophysiology. The postholder will be expected to contribute to weekly Outpatient Clinics, mainly in the areas of CESS, Ketogenic Diet and Tuberous Sclerosis under Consultant supervision.

The post holder will also have the opportunity to gain experience and confidence in video EEG telemetry reporting supervised by Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologists. There are ample research and educational opportunities embedded within the post. Further training in SEEG and special aspects of advanced CESS could be arranged formally.

  • Clinical Care:
    Run autonomous ward rounds for patients with complex epilepsies and lead supervised outpatient clinics.
  • Specialist Management:
    Be involved in the management of alternative therapies, including the Ketogenic Diet (KD) and Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) services.
  • MDT Coordination:
    Prepare and present patient cases at the local and national CESS Multidisciplinary Team meetings.
  • Investigation & Reporting:
    Gain experience and confidence in video EEG telemetry reporting, supported by Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologists.
  • Education & Research:
    Participate in departmental teaching, clinical audit projects, clinical governance activities, and contribute to the department’s research portfolio with an expectation of peer‑reviewed publication where possible.
