Overview

The Department of Healthcare for Older People at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital is expanding its geriatric service with a comprehensive care model for frail older adults. We are seeking dynamic Consultant Geriatricians to join our front‑door and peri‑operative teams, with particular interest in those who specialise in front‑door geriatrics, orthogeriatric liaison, and falls management.

Responsibilities
  • Improve early identification and provide a comprehensive geriatric assessment of frail older adults arriving at the hospital front door.
  • Take part in service development, including the creation of an acute frailty pathway and the integration of orthogeriatric services within the regional fractured neck of femur service.
  • Collaborate with the wider Independent Specialized Osteoporosis Services (BSOL) integrated system to explore alternatives to acute hospital attendance for frail older adults.
  • Develop community‑based initiatives, such as an In‑Reach to Intermediate Care centres and a rapid‑access GP clinic, to facilitate early review and reduce hospital admissions.
  • Provide liaison orthogeriatric input for patients with fractures and contribute to orthogeriatric MDT clinics (falls, Parkinson’s, osteoporosis, and general geriatric clinics).
  • Lead the Frailty Same‑Day Emergency Care (FSDEC) service to deliver specialist input, support early discharge, and manage episodes of acute care for frail patients.
  • Identify and advance opportunities for new services, including tilt‑table testing and syncope clinics, as relevant to the candidate’s expertise.
Benefits
  • Dedicated 10‑programmed activity posts with flexibility for part‑time arrangements.
  • Supportive environment focused on staff wellbeing and professional development.
  • Opportunity to develop and lead new services within a large, established geriatric team.
Commitment to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all feel valued and respected. For staff with a disability or long‑term health condition, reasonable adjustments will be made to enable them to carry out their role effectively.
