The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Consultant Spinal Surgeon with an interest in adult degenerative surgery, in particular less or minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS). This is to maintain capacity and improve delivery of high-quality spinal surgery. The Consultant would join a surgical team of ten orthopaedic and four neurosurgical spinal surgeons, working with colleagues to ensure and enhance effective patient centred care.
The department undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures with particular expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.
Main duties of the jobThis post is a substantive role to undertake adult spinal surgery and help with increasing waiting lists. There is a need to undertake surgery in an efficient manner with an eye to meeting NHS aims of reducing in hospital patient stay. The workload reflects that. The appointee will have a particular interest in adult MIS surgery but a broad experience in adult degenerative spinal surgery.
It is essential that the applicant is a well experienced Spinal Surgeon with consultant experience and subspecialty interest and proven track record over several years of delivering high quality effective care to patients.
The department is looking for someone who can help lead clinical and non-clinical care in a challenging national environment. They will maintain a level of competence commensurate with participating in a comprehensive spinal on call service including decompression and stabilisation for spinal cord and cauda equina compression. The hospital services a large catchment area for malignant spinal cord compression and the on call often calls upon those skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe department is looking to grow its MISS offering and thus documented logbook experience of LLIF / ALIF / OLIF / MIS TLIF / MIS PLIF is desired along with experience of navigation, robotics (though there is no current spinal robot available), endoscopy, or augmented reality.
The individual appointed to the post will have completed orthopaedic or neurosurgical higher surgical training and have completed Spinal fellowship(s) with particular interest in adult degenerative spinal surgery. They will ideally have more than a year of consultant level practice (locum or substantive) delivering and leading in-patient and out-patient spinal surgery.
