Graduate English Academic Coach

Do you want a full academic year in an Outstanding secondary school where you build serious English intervention experience across KS3 and KS4?

Graduate English Academic Coach

September 2026 start, to July 2027 £ 90 - £111 per day, term time only 'Outstanding' secondary school, Ward of Edgbaston.

Role

You will work alongside the English department to raise attainment through targeted support, not vague "helping out". Your week will include 1:1 and small group sessions plus in-class support, focused on the skills pupils lose marks on most.

You will support KS3 reading and writing foundations, then build that into KS4 GCSE-style responses with tight structure and clear routines.

In KS3, you will strengthen reading accuracy, vocabulary, inference, and paragraphing, so pupils access the curriculum with fewer barriers.

In KS4, you will help pupils plan, write, and improve under time conditions, using consistent routines: read, annotate, select evidence, explain, and refine.

You will model strong answers, break tasks into small steps, and use quick checks to spot misconceptions early.

You will track what you cover, record brief outcomes, and feed back to teachers so your sessions stay aligned to current class priorities and assessment points.

English is a core subject at KS3 and KS4, so your work connects directly to whole-school outcomes.

Candidate

You bring clarity, calm authority, and strong subject knowledge. You explain ideas in simple steps and keep pupils focused without turning correction into conflict.

  • Degree at 2:2 or above, ideally English, English Literature, English Language, or a related subject
  • Confident supporting KS3 reading and writing, plus KS4 GCSE exam skills and extended responses
  • Comfortable delivering 1:1 and small group sessions with clear aims and consistent routines
  • Experience with young people through tutoring, mentoring, coaching, youth work, or volunteering is desirable
  • Professional approach to safeguarding, confidentiality, and behaviour expectations
  • Enhanced DBS required, plus right to work checks, references, and standard school vetting in line with statutory guidance
The School

You will join an Outstanding secondary school in Birmingham's Ward of Edgbaston. The area sits in the south-west of the city and includes a mix of residential communities and major education sites, so the school serves a diverse pupil intake.

You will work in a structured setting with clear systems, high expectations, and a strong focus on outcomes. English staff plan support around real gaps, with intervention that links directly to classroom teaching, so you always know the purpose of each session.

The Outstanding label refers to the school's published inspection outcome, with inspection reporting shifting away from single headline grades.

Apply Now

Send your CV to be considered. If shortlisted, you will get a call to confirm your availability for September 2026, your experience with young people, and your confidence supporting KS3 and KS4 English.

Checks follow, then the school stage is arranged in good time for the start date.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
