We are now looking for a Careers Advisor to support our Higher Education students as they prepare for their next steps after university, whether that is employment, further study, professional development or launching their own career path.
About the roleThe Careers Advisor will provide impartial careers information, advice and guidance to Higher Education students across SoCAI. This is a student facing role with a strong focus on employability, progression, confidence building and preparation for life after university.
Our students include a mix of young adults, mature learners and international students, many of whom will benefit from practical support with career planning, CVs, applications, interviews, workplace expectations and understanding UK employment routes.
You will work closely with academic teams, student support colleagues and external partners to deliver a careers service that is accessible, practical and relevant to the courses we offer. This will include one to one appointments, workshops, drop in sessions, employability events, employer engagement and support with tracking student progression outcomes.
What You’ll Be Doing- Provide impartial careers information, advice and guidance to HE students through one to one appointments, group workshops, drop in sessions and online support.
- Help students identify realistic and aspirational progression routes, including graduate employment, further study, internships, placements, volunteering and professional development opportunities.
- Support students with CV writing, cover letters, job applications, Linked In profiles, interview preparation and assessment centre readiness.
- Deliver practical employability sessions linked to student needs, course areas and graduate outcomes.
- Support mature and international students with understanding UK workplace expectations, professional behaviours and routes into employment.
- Work with academic teams to embed careers and employability activity into the student journey where appropriate.
- Build relationships with employers, industry contacts and external organisations to create opportunities for talks, workshops, networking and progression activity.
- Organise and support careers events, employer sessions, progression fairs and employability focused activities.
- Maintain accurate records of student engagement, careers appointments, activities and outcomes.
- Support the tracking and reporting of student destinations, progression and graduate outcomes.
- Contribute to wider student support activity by signposting students to appropriate internal or external services where careers advice overlaps with wellbeing, finance or academic support.
- Keep up to date with graduate labour market trends, employability practice and relevant careers guidance standards.
- Experience providing careers advice, employability support, student guidance or progression support in an education, training, university or similar setting.
- A good understanding of careers information, advice and guidance, employability development and student progression routes.
- Experience supporting students or adults with CVs, applications, interviews and career planning.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to build trust and provide clear, practical advice to a diverse student population.
- Confidence delivering workshops, presentations or group sessions.
- Good understanding of the needs of HE students, including mature learners and international students.
- Strong organisation skills, with the ability to manage appointments, events, records and follow up activity.
- Ability to work collaboratively with academic staff, student support teams, employers and external partners.
