Job Description

This is a fixed-term academic teaching post in the Department of Political Science and International Studies. The post is for the period 1 September 2026 to 31 July 2027. The post holder will contribute to undergraduate teaching, assessment, supervision, student support and relevant departmental administration. Main responsibilities will include the following:

  • Deliver lectures and seminars on a Research Design module (UG2), covering basics of research design; state theory, documentary research and archives; institutionalism and ethnography; constructivism, interviews and focus groups; and post‑structuralism, discourse analysis and visual methods.
  • Convene and manage a UG3 module, Conflict and Peace in Deeply Divided Societies, including all lectures and seminars. Current topics include introducing deeply divided societies; explaining ethnic conflict; understanding inter‑ethnic violence; secession and partition; peace processes; power‑sharing and territorial conflict management; inclusive peace, including gender and sexual minorities; civic parties and social movements; and dealing with the past.
  • Prepare teaching materials, support student learning, provide feedback and contribute to assessment and moderation in line with departmental requirements.
  • Liaise with colleagues to ensure coherent module delivery and appropriate coverage of theory, methods and case material.
  • Contribute to the supervision, marking and moderation of Undergraduate dissertation as determined by departmental requirements.
Person Specification
  • A PhD in a subject area relevant to political science, international relations, peace and conflict studies or a closely related discipline.
  • Relevant teaching experience and scholarship within the subject specialism.
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning.
  • Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others.
