We are seeking a dedicated, caring, and highly organised Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator to join Hillcrest School and Sixth Form Centre. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual committed to improving outcomes for children and families and to ensuring that every student feels safe, supported, and able to achieve their full potential. Working closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), Senior Leaders, Heads of Year, the Teaching Team, families, and external agencies, you will play a key role in promoting student welfare, supporting vulnerable students, and strengthening the school's safeguarding culture.

Job Description and Person Specification

Responsible to:
Deputy Headteacher - Culture and Inclusion (DSL)

Purpose

To act as an operational Deputy DSL as the front‑line lead for day‑to‑day safeguarding operations across the school. Working in close collaboration with the SLT and Deputy Headteacher (DSL), the post holder provides comprehensive, confidential services focused on child protection and general safeguarding to ensure all students are safeguarded. To lead and manage mental health provision across the school in line with statutory guidance and OFSTED expectations.

Safeguarding
  • Act as the school’s Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead in accordance with statutory guidance issued by the Department of Education, including KCSIE.
  • Lead and promote a strong safeguarding culture across the school in line with Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework.
  • Support transition at KS2‑KS3 to ensure vulnerable students, including those with Child Protection Plans or Children in Need status, receive seamless support and that all legal mandates are met.
  • Support the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) in implementing the school's safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the identification, monitoring, and support of vulnerable pupils.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up‑to‑date safeguarding records using the school's recording systems.
  • Lead the safeguarding team meetings with the Deputy Headteacher (DSL).
  • Attend safeguarding meetings, child protection conferences, core groups, and multi‑agency meetings as required.
  • Monitor safeguarding concerns and ensure timely follow‑up actions are completed.
  • Support staff in reporting concerns and understanding safeguarding procedures.
  • Support the Section 175 Audit.
  • Contribute to safeguarding audits, reviews, and inspections.
Mental Health & Wellbeing
  • Lead the development and implementation of the school’s mental health and wellbeing strategy.
  • Promote a whole‑school approach to resilience and inclusion.
  • Provide pastoral support to pupils experiencing social, emotional, behavioural, attendance, or welfare concerns.
  • Support the creation and management of mental health support plans for identified/targeted students.
  • Liaise with subject teachers regarding relevant details of support plans and strategies for students with mental health concerns.
  • Develop positive relationships with students and act as a trusted point of contact.
  • Support students through individual interventions, mentoring, and welfare plans.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of support strategies for students facing barriers to learning.
  • Evaluate pupil wellbeing data from the Birmingham Wellbeing Census and support the development of appropriate action plans.
