Full time starting salary is normally in the range £47,389 to £56,535 with potential progression once in post to £63,606

The School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, UK, seeks to recruit talented computer scientists from diverse backgrounds for the role of Assistant Professor. Academic Development Programme

New Assistant Professors will undertake a 5‑year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor. The programme includes various development opportunities and time to reflect and develop.

Role Summary

We seek candidates with research activity in or related to Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence. Other research themes of interest include Cyber‑Physical Systems, Theory of Computation, Human‑Computer Interaction and Distributed Systems. Please indicate your primary research theme in your application.

Computer Science in Birmingham is ranked 3rd in research among all UK universities and education is ranked 6th in the UK. The University is ranked 68th in the QS world ranking.

You will contribute to research, teaching and administration, and demonstrate academic citizenship by fostering supportive relationships.

Education
  • Teach and examine courses at various levels
  • Plan and review teaching approaches and support others to do the same
  • Design contemporary, inclusive and engaging curriculum content
  • Collaborate with colleagues to deliver teaching, learning and assessment
  • Use digital resources effectively to support learning and assessment
  • Develop programme proposals and contribute to teaching programme design
  • Supervise, mark and examine as appropriate
  • Provide advice on learning and teaching tasks and methods
  • Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement related to your specialism
  • Supervise projects, dissertations and practical work
Research
  • Plan, publish high‑quality research and secure funding
  • Manage research activities and supervise other research staff
  • Publish findings in journals and conferences
  • Mentor PhD students and early‑career researchers
  • Provide expert advice within the discipline
  • Participate in cross‑disciplinary networks and enhancing knowledge transfer and enterprise
  • Document impact and ensure it is realized
Management and Administration
  • Contribute to research and teaching management across Department/School
  • Lead and manage a team to devise and implement new processes
  • Advise on personal development of colleagues and students
  • Contribute to administrative activities such as appeals panels and working groups
  • Manage enterprise, business development and public engagement activities
  • Develop and contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, and school outreach
  • Support equality, diversity and inclusion policies and act on unacceptable behaviour
  • Plan, monitor and evaluate equality impact in line with the Equality Act 2010 and university EDI strategy
Citizenship
