Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO)

West Midlands/ temporary / £45k - 60k per year

Location: Birmingham - Alum Rock
Salary: £45,000 – £60,000 per annum, dependent on experience, qualifications and school pay structure
Start Date: November 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time – School-Based Position
Hours: Full-Time, Monday to Friday

SENCO – Inclusive Primary School

Teacher Active is working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive Primary School to recruit an experienced Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) for a full-time position.

This is an excellent opportunity for an established SENCO or experienced SEND leader who is passionate about inclusive education and improving outcomes for pupils with additional needs.

The successful candidate will take a strategic lead on SEND provision across the school, working closely with the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team, teachers, support staff, parents, carers and external professionals.

The school is committed to providing a supportive and nurturing environment where individual needs are recognised and every pupil is encouraged to achieve their full potential.

Candidate Requirements

The successful SENCO will ideally have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK
    .
  • A recognised SENCO qualification, such as NASENCO or the current NPQ for SENCOs
    .
  • Previous experience working successfully as a SENCO.
  • Primary school experience across EYFS, KS1 and/or KS2.
  • Strong knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Experience managing EHCPs, annual reviews and SEND provision.
  • Experience working as part of or alongside a Senior Leadership Team.
  • A relevant leadership or SLT qualification would be advantageous.
  • Experience supporting pupils with a range of SEND and SEMH needs.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills.
  • A strong commitment to inclusive education and pupil success.
Key Responsibilities

As SENCO, you will:

  • Lead and develop the school's approach to SEND and inclusion.
  • Oversee the identification, assessment and provision for pupils with SEND.
  • Coordinate EHCPs, annual reviews and associated statutory processes.
  • Monitor pupil progress and evaluate the impact of SEND interventions.
  • Support teachers with adaptive teaching, differentiation and appropriate strategies.
  • Lead and support teaching assistants and other staff working with SEND pupils.
  • Provide SEND guidance, coaching and professional development to staff.
  • Liaise effectively with parents, carers, local authorities and external agencies.
  • Work with educational psychologists, therapists and other professionals.
  • Maintain accurate SEND records and ensure statutory requirements are met.
  • Contribute to SLT meetings and whole-school improvement planning.
  • Promote a positive culture where pupils with SEND are fully included in school life.
Safeguarding & Compliance

Teacher Active and the school are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Successful applicants will be required to provide:

  • Two professional references from recent employers
    .
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service
    .
  • If no suitable DBS is held, willingness to obtain a new Enhanced DBS through Teacher Active.
  • Evidence of Right to Work in the UK
    .
  • Evidence of QTS and relevant SENCO/leadership qualifications.
  • Relevant employment and education history as part of safeguarding checks.
