SEMH Support Staff

About the role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a well-established specialist provision in Birmingham. Starting in September 2026, you will play a vital role in supporting students with social, emotional and mental health needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support students both inside and outside the classroom.
• Deliver targeted interventions to improve engagement, confidence and wellbeing.
• Assist in managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour strategies.
• Encourage students to develop social skills, resilience and self-esteem.
• Support the implementation of EHCP targets where applicable.
• Work alongside teaching staff to adapt learning activities to individual needs.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress and behaviour.

Pre-requisites:

• Experience working within an SEMH, SEND, alternative provision or youth support setting.
• Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and behaviour management strategies.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively to challenging situations.
• A proactive and flexible approach to supporting learners.
• Relevant qualifications are advantageous but not essential.
