About the roleYou will be joining a hardworking and successful team specialising in all aspects of traffic and transport planning, including sustainable transport (buses and active travel) and urban regeneration projects. This will primarily be focused on Public Sector clients, and projects.
The team work collaboratively across the UK and this role would be based in our office in Birmingham city centre. You will have the opportunity to work on many key projects in the Transport sector. One of our recent, ongoing projects is the Birmingham Transport Plan (BTP). Appointed as Transport Planners, Pell Frischmann was responsible for assembling and maintaining the BTP throughout its development, incorporating feedback from key stakeholders and shaping the schemes required to create a cleaner, safer and more inclusive transport system for Birmingham.
Among these initiative, Pell Frischmann led the development of the pioneering City Centre Movement and Access Strategy which will divide the city centre into six segments where the boundaries are permeable only to sustainable travel modes.
Upon joining Pell Frischmann you will become part of an expert, multidisciplinary team where you will gain training and experience in your chosen specialism.
Additionally, you will be enrolled onto our two-year Graduate programme. This exciting programme is built around the competence requirements of professional institutions and a great way to kick start your career. You will have opportunity to network with others graduates across the Group and develop key skills such as project management, business and personal effectiveness. You will be involved working the below areas as part of your day-to-day role.
MainDuties and Responsibilities
- Data collection and analysis: Gather, manage and interpret transport data (traffic counts, journey times, passenger data, etc.) to support scheme development and evaluation.
- Transport modelling and appraisal: Assist in preparing transport models, demand forecasts, and cost-benefit assessments using tools such as Excel, TEMPro, or TAG guidance.
- Scheme development: Contribute to the concept and feasibility design of sustainable transport measures (e.g., bus lanes, cycle routes, junction improvements, pedestrian crossings). This will also be using AutoCAD.
- Policy review and alignment: Support analysis of national and local transport policies to ensure project compliance (e.g. Bus Back Better, LTN 1/20, Local Transport Plans).
- Stakeholder engagement: Assist in the preparation of materials for public consultation, stakeholder workshops, and client meetings.
- Report writing: Draft technical notes, option assessment reports, and business case inputs to support funding submissions and decision making.
- Collaboration: Work as part of a multidisciplinary team including transport planners, engineers, and modellers to deliver high-quality outputs.
Essential or Preferred? Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Transport, Mathematics, Geography, Civil Engineering, Planning or a related subject.
- Placement in a Transport Planning team or within a consultancy environment.
- Analytical and problem‑solving skills, with ability to handle quantitative.
- Efficient communication skills with a range of audiences, having an excellent level of written and spoken English.
- Strong numeracy, analytical and report‑writing skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work to manage time effectively to meet deadlines, both within a team and autonomously.
- Experience using GIS software, such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Master’s degree in Transport Planning/Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geography, Economics, or time served experience.
