We’re looking for an experienced Nuclear Criticality Safety Consultant to join our large & growing team of experienced nuclear safety case professionals and help deliver high‑quality safety advice across some of the most complex, high‑profile clients (including EDF Energy (HPC, SZC and Generation), Urenco, Babcock Marine at Devonport, Canadian Nuclear Laboratory, Sellafield Ltd, Nuclear Restoration Services, Nuclear Waste Services to name a few!)

Stantec’s nuclear capability work with operators and regulators across the new build, existing generation, decommissioning and defence markets. We specialise in safety cases, criticality assessment, environmental management, nuclear safety governance, radioactive waste management and decommissioning strategy, and development/demonstration of nuclear organisational capability.

About

The Role

You’ll play a key role in supporting clients across the full nuclear lifecycle – operations, life extension, and decommissioning. Your work will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive nuclear criticality safety assessments for various nuclear systems, facilities, and operations.
  • Supporting our clients to develop and implement criticality safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Performing complex calculations and analyses using specialized nuclear criticality codes and software tools.
  • Evaluation and mitigation of potential risks associated with nuclear criticality events through effective safety controls and measures.
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance to multidisciplinary teams on criticality safety issues and solutions.
  • Producing, reviewing and approving criticality safety documentation, reports, and procedures.
  • Collaborating with clients, regulatory authorities, stakeholders, and external consultants on criticality safety matters.
  • Taking a lead role on delivery of specific technical work tasks, documentation review/update, technical report authoring, technical recording at workshops.
  • Supporting in client engagement and business development interactions, as well as support to the development of bid submissions for new work.

As an experienced Criticality Safety Consultant, you will help ensure nuclear operations remain safe, stable, and fully compliant across the entire lifecycle of facilities and programmes. Your expertise will give clients confidence that criticality risks are understood, controlled, and managed in a way that protects people, the environment, and the communities we serve. In this role, you will strengthen the safety and defensibility of nuclear operations by delivering rigorous criticality assessments that underpin safe facility design and operation, reduce the likelihood of criticality events, improve project certainty, support constructive regulatory engagement, and enhance organisational resilience.

Overall you will play a key role in contributing to the safe delivery of clean energy and decommissioning programmes, helping ensure nuclear activities remain responsible, sustainable, and trusted.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Experience in nuclear criticality assessment and safety within the nuclear industry.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and standards related to nuclear criticality safety (e.g., ONR, IAEA).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of nuclear criticality codes (e.g., MONK, MCNP, SCALE) and proficiency in performing criticality calculations.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to assess complex technical issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
