About

The Role

At SMT GB, we're looking for an exceptional Specialist Engineer to become the technical authority within our Brownhills depot, supporting one of the world's leading construction equipment brands.

This is a senior engineering position for an individual who thrives on solving complex technical challenges, leading by example, and sharing expertise with others. Acting as the depot's recognised subject matter expert, you will support the diagnosis and resolution of advanced machine issues, drive technical best practice, and help develop the capability of engineers across the wider service team.

Working closely with Field Service Engineers, Workshop Engineers, Customer Support Representatives, manufacturers, and customers, you'll play a vital role in maximising machine uptime, improving first-time fix rates, and ensuring our customers receive industry-leading support.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled engineer looking to take the next step in their career without moving away from hands-on engineering.

Key Responsibilities

As a Specialist Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and support across a diverse fleet of Volvo Construction Equipment, helping to deliver exceptional service standards and customer satisfaction.

Key Duties Will Include
  • Acting as the lead escalation point for complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic faults.
  • Supporting engineers with advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting and repair strategies both remotely and on-site.
  • Carrying out detailed root cause investigations and implementing effective long-term corrective actions.
  • Working closely with Volvo technical support teams to resolve challenging machine issues.
  • Providing coaching, mentoring and technical guidance to engineers across the service operation.
  • Supporting apprentice development and contributing to the upskilling of engineering colleagues.
  • Analysing machine health, service data and recurring failures to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Assisting with new product introductions, software updates and emerging technologies.
  • Promoting best practice in safety, quality and service delivery.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives that enhance machine reliability, workshop efficiency and customer experience.
About You

You’ll be an experienced engineer with extensive knowledge of construction equipment and a passion for technical problem-solving. You enjoy tackling the issues others cannot solve and take pride in supporting colleagues to achieve the highest standards.

You Will Possess
  • A recognised engineering qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience maintaining, repairing and diagnosing heavy plant, construction equipment or specialist machinery.
  • Expert fault‑finding skills across hydraulic, electrical, electronic and engine systems.
  • Strong knowledge of diagnostic processes, OEM service information and technical support systems.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching or providing technical guidance to engineers.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with engineers, customers and business stakeholders.
  • A proactive and analytical approach to identifying and solving technical problems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to safe working practices.
  • Strong IT skills and confidence using diagnostic software and digital systems.
  • A full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Experience working with Volvo Construction Equipment.
  • Previous experience in a Technical Support Engineer, Specialist Engineer, Master Technician or Senior Engineer capacity.
  • Knowledge of telematics, machine control systems and modern construction equipment technologies.
