The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is a large Major Trauma Unit near the City Centre with excellent transport links. The Hand Service within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a regional hand centre accepting patients with acute and complex needs.
This post will be based within our hand therapy rehabilitation department where there is a vibrant and supportive team of specialist OTS, Physiotherapists and Therapy assistants. With opportunities to work in specialist multidisciplinary hand clinics alongside Consultant Hand Surgeons and also management of inpatient hand injuries.
We are looking for a motivated and flexible Band 6 Hand Therapist OT or Physiotherapist to join our expanding team. New investments and developments in our Hand Service have meant there are exciting opportunities within the team for an experienced therapist looking to move into a senior position or for candidates who are looking to develop their experience further working alongside a large team of experienced therapists, consultants and the wider MDT.
The Hand Therapy service actively supports CPD and personal development for all staff. We have a comprehensive in service training programme and run courses within the department.

Main duties of the jobYou will need to have experience of various hand assessments and treatment modalities in the rehabilitation of hand injuries and conditions, including good splinting skills. Additionally having good clinical analysis and reasoning in your assessment and applying treatment options is required. Having a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology is desirable, with certainty of progressing this further. You must be keen to develop your Hand Therapy clinical skills further whilst developing greater responsibilities in your caseload and time management.
Good communication skills and organisational skills are required and will also be developed. There are opportunities to experience staff management, such as supervision and participating in student development and learning.
There are opportunities to work across two sites, QEHB and Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, creating a mixed caseload of trauma and elective patients.
The department is involved in a variety of research projects and is committed to embedding evidence based care with the aim of improving patient outcomes.

- Appropriate Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy or professional qualification e.g. MCSP/ BSc or MSc. (E)
- Registration with Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC)(E)
- COT/CSP or equivalent professional registration. (E)
- Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own speciality, e.g. post registration training, management competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio. (E)
- Relevant, accredited, postgraduate education/courses and CPD (E)
- Member of relevant professional clinical interest group (BAHT / BESS / MACP etc.)
- Attended student educator course
- Considerable post registration experience of which should an acute NHS organisation and completion of core rotations in MSK / Hand Therapy / Neuro (E)
- Experience of staff management e.g. supervision and support of staff. (E)
- Involvement in Multi professional team working (E)
- Basic skill competency
- Complex splinting ability (D)
- BAHT level 1/11 course
- Ability to work autonomously within specialist clinical area & undertake clinical analysis and reasoning skills in the assessment and treatment of patients and apply broad standards & guidelines to own practice. (E)
