THE OPPORTUNITY

We're seeking a Doula Health Champion to join our team as part of the West Birmingham Health Champions Project, funded by the Fairer Futures Fund.

This is more than a job - it's an opportunity to transform lives at their most vulnerable moments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support a small caseload of vulnerable pregnant women and new mothers across Birmingham
  • Provide on-call support as a birth partner, offering emotional and practical assistance during pregnancy, labour, and postpartum
  • Ensure mothers can access NHS maternity services and charitable support from food banks, clothing banks, and community resources
  • Help mothers develop baby care skills, successfully breastfeed, and access postnatal services
  • Act as an advocate when dealing with healthcare agencies and service providers
  • Deliver parent education and group sessions for vulnerable pregnant women, new mothers, and babies
  • Maintain accurate records using our CRM system (Lamplight), including referral forms, assessments, case notes, and feedback
  • Complete evaluation forms and contribute to service quality monitoring
  • Participate in mandatory training and professional development opportunities
  • Attend monthly Doula Service team meetings
  • Work within Bethel's policies and procedures, maintaining safeguarding standards

Our doulas serve as a vital bridge between vulnerable pregnant women and the healthcare system. You'll work with women facing:

  • Social isolation and limited family support
  • Economic hardship and housing insecurity
  • Language barriers affecting healthcare access
  • Complex health needs requiring specialist care
  • Previous trauma impacting their birth experience

Your support makes a measurable difference in maternal and infant health outcomes.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Caring, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach
  • High level of self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Proven track record working with vulnerable people in community settings
  • Experience in maternity or clinical service delivery
  • Enthusiastic and positive team player
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience supporting people through challenging circumstances
  • In sympathy with the Christian ethos of Bethel Health and Healing Network
  • Satisfactory DBS check, references, and right to work in the UK
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in maternity, health, or caring environments
  • Experience working in multi-ethnic, multi-faith settings
  • Experience with community groups and grassroots organisations
  • ICT literacy and familiarity with database systems

    Bloomsbury Health Centre, Nechells, Birmingham B7 5DT
  • Some flexibility in working patterns to accommodate birth support on-call requirements
