General Practitioner - Single Point of Access

Responsibilities

The postholder will provide real-time clinical leadership and oversight, supporting a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure timely, appropriate, and safe triage decisions and care navigation. The GP will work closely with advanced clinical practitioners, registered clinicians, and consultant colleagues (via daily MDT) to ensure effective system-wide coordination and admission avoidance. Provide clinical triage and validation of referrals received into the SPA.

Make safe and timely disposition decisions for patients, directing them into appropriate community, primary care, urgent care, or acute pathways.

Use strong risk assessment and risk management skills to balance patient safety with appropriate use of services. Work closely with ambulance crews, NHS 111, community teams, and secondary care partners to ensure coordinated patient flow. Provide clear documentation and communication of clinical decisions. Escalate complex or high-risk cases appropriately.

Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of SPA processes. Work within Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust governance frameworks, policies, and safeguarding procedures.
