We are seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Officer to join our team at Isle of Wight College. The successful candidate will foster a positive Health and Safety culture within the College, minimising risks for students, staff, and visitors.
About The Role:As part of the Health and Safety team, you will ensure compliance with legislation and best practices, support systematic and proactive health and safety measures, and provide guidance for improvements. Responsibilities include overseeing health and safety for educational visits, conducting risk assessments, implementing policies, and delivering induction training. Additionally, you will assist with operational facilities management as part of the wider Estates team.
Key Responsibilities:- Support College students and staff by ensuring appropriate offsite educational visits procedures are in place, including safeguarding, inclusion, and risk management.
- Manage Health and Safety information systems to identify and mitigate risks associated with College activities, educational visits, and health data, ensuring adherence to relevant regulations and standards while maintaining confidentiality.
- Conduct regular health and safety inspections, investigations, and audits with managers and technical staff to identify potential hazards, recommend improvements, and celebrate best practices.
- Prepare and present reports and recommendations on Health and Safety activities and inspection findings. Implement and enforce health and safety practices in compliance with current regulations.
- Provide health and safety training courses for staff, including mandatory Health and Safety induction training, evacuation system training, risk assessment, COSHH, and educational visits training.
- Investigate and keep records of incidents and accidents, producing statistics for managers to identify trends and provide advice on remedial actions as required.
- Ensure the College remains compliant with all Health and Safety regulations by staying informed about new health, safety, and environmental legislation.
- Support the monitoring of emergency procedures, including lockdown drills and critical incidents, and undertake regular testing of fire alarms and equipment in line with legal requirements as directed by the Head of Estates and Safety.
- Provide assistance and expert advice in conducting comprehensive wellbeing risk assessments for staff, including assessments for Display Screen Equipment (DSE), maternity, disability, ill health, manual handling, and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
- Assist with the management of COSHH procedures and risk management to ensure registers are kept up-to-date, regularly reviewing and updating them to comply with Health and Safety regulations.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Hold Level 2 Qualifications in English and Maths (Level 2 Qualifications include GCSE grade A*-C, a pass at ‘O’ Level)
- Hold an IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) or NEBOSH (National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health) qualification or be willing to work towards this
- Hold a full, clean driving license
- Hold a First Aid qualification, or this must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment, and maintain the qualification throughout employment
- Hold a Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Certification or be willing to work towards one
