About the Role

Midwives are the lead professionals for normal pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. They run antenatal appointments, deliver babies (autonomously for low‑risk births), provide postnatal home visits, and refer to obstetricians or paediatricians when complications arise. Day‑to‑day work is split between hospital labour wards, midwife‑led birth centres, community caseloads, and home visits. Every UK midwife must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) before practising.

Manage low‑risk births autonomously; raise concerns to obstetric teams when needed.

Salary & Funding

UK midwives are paid on the NHS Agenda for Change bands, starting at Band 5 for newly qualified nurses and progressing through specialist and consultant roles. Pay is aligned with adult nursing, with London high‑cost‑area supplements layered on top.

Band 6 – Senior / Specialist Midwife

Band 7 – Lead Midwife / Practice Educator

Band 8 – Consultant Midwife / Matron

London weighting adds £4,300–£1,200 to base pay depending on zone. Newly qualified midwives at a central London teaching hospital earn around £32,700 against about £28,400 nationally. Many midwives also pick up bank shifts at £25–£40 per hour for additional income.

Typical Career Path

Years 0–2 – Band 5:
Rotate through antenatal, labour ward, postnatal and community to build a full caseload.

Years 2–5 – Band 6:
Specialise (perinatal mental‑health, bereavement, public health) and take complex caseloads. Mentor newly qualified midwives.

Years 5–8 – Band 7:
Lead a labour ward shift, run a caseload‑holding community team or take a Practice Educator role training students.

Years 8+ – Band 8:
Clinical leadership across a hospital trust, service redesign, or research‑active academic midwifery posts.
