Band 2 Phlebotomist (Ward Based)

We are seeking enthusiastic and experienced phlebotomists to join our Phlebotomy team at Heartlands Hospital. This is an interesting and wide‑range post requiring a caring person with excellent communication, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work under pressure. Successful candidates will have recent clinical experience undertaking phlebotomy (preferably within the last six months) and are expected to complete our local training and competence assessments following appointment.
Mainduties of the job
The role requires a flexible approach and the ability to remain calm in a busy environment. It involves obtaining blood samples from inpatients and outpatients, including paediatric patients, and working as part of a team without direct supervision. The post holder must handle patients confidentially, professionally and sensitively.
Suitable applicants will also need to have a desire to learn and contribute effectively to patient care and be capable of working as part of a team, while taking responsibility for their own work.
The post holder will be based at Heartlands Hospital and will provide a ward‑based phlebotomy service between 07:30 and 12:30 Monday to Friday, with some rotational Saturday shifts. Hours will be discussed/confirmed upon appointment. Fixed‑term or secondments will also be considered.

- Qualified and experienced phlebotomist
- Evidence of completion of a Health‑Related Education and Development programme or Care Certificate
- GCSE or equivalent to Level 2 Functional Skills Maths & English
- Experience working in an acute hospital or provider‑led healthcare environment as a Health Care Support Worker
- Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary and cross‑agency environment
- Experience carrying out assigned duties after training and using initiative
- Competent in a range of clinical skills and practices relevant to the scope of practice required
- Understanding of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity
- Aware of Health & Safety issues
- Knowledge of the parameters and scope of practice in which the post holder should work and when to seek advice and support of others
- Willingness to take on new skills and develop scope of practice
- Trust trained to take blood culture
- Qualified and experienced phlebotomist
- Experience working in an acute hospital or provider‑led healthcare environment as a Health Care Support Worker
- Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary and cross‑agency environment
- Experience carrying out assigned duties after training and using initiative
- Competent in a range of clinical skills and practices relevant to the scope of practice required
- Understanding of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity
- Aware of Health & Safety issues
- Knowledge of the parameters and scope of practice in which the post holder should work and when to seek advice and support of others
- Willingness to take on new skills and develop scope of practice
- Phlebotomy trained with experience in an acute setting
- Experienced in venepuncture
- Ability to read / write and speak, receive and understand instructions in English
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the role and tasks involved
