Our Neonatal Service seeks compassionate individuals who are keen to provide support and advice to families with sick and premature new-borns at UHB

This is a patient facing role to enhance infant and family wellbeing, working under the direct supervision of registered practitioners the post holder will provide support in a variety of ways:
Improving infant feeding, family mental health, signposting to financial advice services, promoting infant developmental care, teaching about infant home safety, supporting the implementation of safeguarding plans and providing support to families whose baby is receiving palliative care or who have experienced a bereavement.

You will join our highly skilled team ensuring families receive social, emotional and practical support during inpatient admissions and in preparation for discharge home.

Individuals must have experience of working with families and children and they must be able to demonstrate effective communication skills.

The Individual would work across the inpatient Neonatal service at Heartlands and Good Hope Hospital, outpatient clinics and also support our Neonatal outreach team in the community.

Working hours can be flexible but cover 7 days a week. There are no night shifts required.

The Family Support worker will contribute to the provision of a comprehensive family support service to parents, carers and babies.

Encourage families to be active participants in their babies care by being present as much as they are able, attending ward rounds, completing the neonatal journey booklet and providing or supporting parent information sessions.

Advocate for families by acting as a bridge between the family and the multidisciplinary teams.

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team ensure the wellbeing needs of the babies and families are being supported within the clinical environment maintaining excellent lines of communication and escalation of concerns.

Promote a Baby Friendly environment following a Family Integrated Care Approach.

Support the creation of a safe and loving bond between babies and their families.

To promote and facilitate parental understanding of the needs of the infant.

Support the psychological wellbeing of the family.

Identify and assist with the implementation of plans to support safeguarding.

Provide practical advice and support to families such as welfare rights advice and benefits, Assist families with the negotiation of care packages, benefits applications and social services liaison.

Plan organise and develop recreational activities to meet specific needs of the infant siblings and family

Undertake training and education as required to assist in the care of families and carers of infants receiving neonatal care.

• GCSE or equivalent Maths and English
• Educated to academic level 3, such as NVQ in health and social care or equivalent relevant experience.
• Level 3 qualification held for at least 12 months

• Good understanding of family-centred care and family integrated care
• Demonstrate a basic knowledge of working with children & young people with additional physical, learning, emotional and social needs
• Ability to prioritise child/families needs both clinically and socially
• Ability to work alone
• Experience of working / participating as part of a team.
• Evidence of ability to work using own initiative and under minimal supervision
• Knowledge of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
• Knowledge of record keeping
• Basic knowledge of computer and IT skills
• Experience of working in the community
• Experience as Family Support Worker or carer in health, social care, short breaks or education setting
• Evidence of teaching or supervising others
• Ability to act in accordance to emergency plans and procedures
