Join our Emergency Practitioner Team and help shape the future of Emergency Practitioner services across the Emergency Departments at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. We are seeking an experienced Emergency Practitioner Team Lead who is a Registered Adult Nurse Emergency Practitioner, Paediatric Emergency Practitioner or Paramedic Emergency Practitioner with experience in the autonomous assessment, diagnosis and management of minor injuries and minor illnesses, including Non-Medical Prescribing.

This is an exciting opportunity to combine clinical practice with leadership, education, governance and service development. Working primarily at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital or Good Hope Hospital, with ad hoc support to Solihull Urgent Treatment Centre, you will provide clinical and operational leadership while maintaining your own clinical practice. You will play a key role in workforce development, quality improvement, service innovation and the continued development of Emergency Practitioner services.

You will influence clinical pathways, lead improvement initiatives and contribute to the education, mentorship and supervision of Emergency Practitioners and other staff. Provide autonomous assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of patients presenting with minor injuries and illnesses, including Non-Medical Prescribing. Deliver safe, effective, patient-centred care in line with clinical pathways, policies and professional standards. Lead the day-to-day management of the Emergency Practitioner service, ensuring safe staffing, patient flow and quality care. Provide visible clinical leadership and support departmental and Trust objectives. Supervise, coach and support Emergency Practitioners, junior staff, students and learners.

Support staff development and competency maintenance with Lead Educators. Support audit, quality improvement, incident review, risk management and patient safety initiatives. Promote compliance with safeguarding, infection prevention and control, health and safety, and Trust policies. Work collaboratively with consultants, GPs, community services and multidisciplinary teams. Contribute to service improvement and innovation. Maintain clinical competence and undertake Emergency Practitioner duties within scope of practice.

Act on behalf of the Matron as delegated and represent the service at meetings and forums. Support admission avoidance through assessment, treatment, referral and discharge planning. Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, appraisal and performance management. Maintain high standards of practice and professionalism. Based at BHH or GHH ED, with ad hoc support to Solihull UTC as required.

    Nursing & Midwifery Council Registered Nurse or HCPC Registered Paramedic or Physiotherapist
  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree supplemented by evidence of post graduate academic courses, short course and development of clinical competencies in practice evidenced in the following areas:
  • o Minor Injury Management (Level6/7)
  • o Consultation Skills
  • o Physical Examination Skills
  • o IRMER (Ionising Radiation Medical
  • Exposure Regulation)
  • o Interpretation of Images (Red Dotcourse)
  • o Adult / Child Life Support Courses
  • o PGD Training / practice aligned to Trust procedures
  • o Minor Illness Management (Level6/7) or Non-Medical Prescriber with willingness to undertake the postgraduate element not completed
  • Plus further specialist training to masters equivalent level., Considerable experience working as aBand 7 (or equivalent) Emergency Practitioner in autonomous assessment of minor injury and minor illness.
  • Demonstrable ability / experience inworking in a multi professional approach to health care delivery and can demonstrate appreciation for complexities of patient access to primary/secondary and voluntary care settings.
