Role Overview The data and development engineer role is part of the Data, Analytics and Development team within the IT function at Galliford Try. The accountabilities for the role sit across the whole data lifecycle from the point of connecting to data at source, through the ETL process, management of data within our data platform, integrations, master data management, reporting, analytics and AI.

It is critical that the role demonstrates best practice and supports the rest of the central team and wider network of data practitioners across the business in maximising the value that can be derived from data. What You Will Be Doing:
Data Connection:
Working with APIs and other transfer mechanisms to establish data feeds from various internal and external sources, designing and implementing efficient data pipelines to pass data into Galliford Try’s data platform.

Storage and Management:
Designing and implementing appropriate database architecture for staging and storing data, implementing appropriate schemas and following best practice to ensure data quality, integrity and security.

Transformation:
Designing and implementing ETL pipelines to transform and model data into a format and structure suitable for reporting and analytics.

Reporting:
Developing interactive dashboards to support the business in self-serving the data and insight they need.

Analytics and AI:
Using models and analytics techniques to enhance or add value to data. This could relate to supervised/unsupervised machine learning and have applications across advanced analytics and AI agent development.

Standards and Best Practice:
Adopting best practice and championing the standards established by the central team, providing support and guidance to the wider network of data practitioners and users across the business.

Contribution to Ways of Working:
Providing constructive challenge to team ways of working and putting forward ideas for improvements and new opportunities.

About You:

Ability to work with stakeholders to understand different areas of the business and capture their requirements in a structured way.

Ability to translate business requirements into technical requirements to inform a solution design.

Competent in creating high-level design documents and low-level technical designs.

A strong understanding of database architecture and the fundamentals of database management and data modelling.

Good understanding of base structures and the capability of languages such as T-SQL, DAX, M Language, and Python.

Strong experience with the Microsoft stack whether via Azure data services or Microsoft Fabric.

Able to demonstrate alignment and work in-line with the Galliford Try values - Excellence, Passion, Integrity, and Collaboration Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to discuss and simplify technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

Excellent organisational skills in managing personal workload and to take the lead and responsibility for projects.

Desirable:

Experience working with Oracle databases and Oracle SQL.Experience developing reports using Power BI.

Experience of using Git to manage version control.

Experience of working to Agile methodology either via Kanban or sprint approaches.
