Overview

Lawes Consulting is supporting a top-tier insurer in recruiting a skilled Property & Casualty Underwriter to join their Birmingham office. This role is ideal for someone looking to underwrite a varied book across Property, Liability, Combined, and Construction, working with a mix of national and independent brokers.

• Underwrite and manage a portfolio across core commercial classes
• Develop and maintain relationships with regional broker partners
• Assess risks accurately and deliver profitable underwriting decisions
• Contribute to new business growth and retention in line with regional strategy
• Provide input into pricing, risk appetite, and broker development initiatives
• Collaborate across teams to support operational and financial goals

• Underwrite new and renewal cases ranging from £10k GWP to high-value risks
• Actively support both new business and existing business
• Engage regularly with national and local brokers to build long-term partnerships
• Apply a balanced approach to underwriting—combining technical insight with commercial judgement

• 2-3 years minimum in commercial underwriting, ideally across Property, Liability, and Combined
• Experience with UK-based commercial risks and broker distribution
• Composite insurer background preferred, though strong MGA or binder-underwriting experience will be considered
• Solid understanding of trading with both large national and independent brokers

• Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities
• Confident communicator with excellent broker-facing skills
• Commercial mindset with a focus on underwriting discipline
• Proficient in prioritising workloads and managing a varied case pipeline
• Technically sound in underwriting construction and combined commercial risks
