Public Law Solicitor

Salary: Competitive and based on experience

Location: Birmingham / Nottingham

A leading legal firm is seeking a Public Law Solicitor to join their Insurance and Public Risk department, based in Birmingham, Nottingham or Cardiff. This role offers you the opportunity to work alongside a team of high-performing administrative and public law lawyers, handling a diverse range of matters including constitutional and administrative law advice, planning, environment, health, information law, judicial review, regulatory litigation and disciplinary issues.

You will:

  • Work on nationally significant public law matters for government departments, local authorities, NHS bodies and regulatory authorities, gaining exposure to high-profile cases that shape policy and governance.
  • Enjoy flexible working opportunities across multiple office locations with access to ongoing training programmes designed to enhance your legal knowledge and personal development.
  • Join a collaborative team committed to supporting your growth through mentoring, knowledge sharing and inclusive leadership that values your input and encourages you to take responsibility for your caseload.

What you'll do:

As a Public Law Solicitor, you will immerse yourself in a variety of challenging legal matters that span constitutional advice, regulatory litigation and statutory interpretation. Your day-to-day activities will involve collaborating with senior lawyers to deliver high-quality guidance to public sector clients including central government departments, local authorities and NHS bodies. You will be responsible for managing your own caseload under supervision while actively participating in marketing initiatives such as presenting seminars or writing legal updates.

Success in this role requires you to master internal systems swiftly, monitor compliance deadlines diligently and provide clear advice on complex legal issues. You will also engage regularly with in-house legal teams and leading counsel to ensure robust representation for clients facing judicial reviews or regulatory challenges. By maintaining meticulous records of your work and meeting financial targets, you will contribute meaningfully to the team's overall performance while developing your own expertise through continuous learning.

  • Support Partners and Senior Associates in advising clients on administrative and constitutional matters, ensuring that all advice is accurate and tailored to client needs.
  • Work closely with public sector bodies on a daily basis, providing guidance on statutory obligations, governance issues and regulatory regimes.
  • Advise clients on vires analysis, legislative drafting, statutory interpretation and the conduct or defence of judicial reviews.
  • Provide expert advice on consultation law, EU law or Human Rights law as required by client cases.
  • Handle litigation tasks including drafting pre-action correspondence, preparing pleadings, liaising with Court staff and assembling trial bundles.
  • Collaborate with in-house legal teams and instruct leading counsel when necessary to ensure comprehensive representation for clients.
  • Monitor critical dates for compliance purposes and maintain meticulous attention to detail in all procedural aspects of case management.
  • Master internal systems and procedures quickly so you can advise clients effectively on process requirements.
  • Take responsibility for managing your own caseload under supervision while contributing marketing support such as preparing seminars, writing reports or updating literature.
  • Record time promptly and meet financial goals by achieving chargeable hours targets consistently.

What you bring:

  • Experience providing advice on administrative and public law risk within the context of statutory interpretation or vires analysis (preferable but not essential as full training will be provided)
  • Ability to advise on consultation law, EU law or Human Rights law with sensitivity to client needs.
  • Experience handling litigation tasks such as drafting pre-action correspondence, preparing pleadings and liaising with Court staff.
  • Familiarity with information law including FOIA (Freedom of Information Act), DPA (Data Protection Act) and EIR (Environmental Information Regulations).
  • Capacity to monitor critical dates accurately while ensuring compliance with procedural requirements.
  • Quick mastery of internal systems coupled with strong attention to detail when advising clients on processes.
  • Effective communication skills enabling harmonious relationships…
