Asbestos Operative

We are seeking a skilled Asbestos Operative to join our Voids team based in Birmingham. The role involves safe removal and management of asbestos‑containing materials from unoccupied properties, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

This is a permanent role with core working hours Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Travel within the South Birmingham area is required.

Fortem is part of a major Social Housing contract with Birmingham City Council – a £50 m Repairs & Maintenance, Capital Works and Retrofit contract covering over 22,500 properties, including high‑rise blocks.

• Removal of floor tiles
• Scraping and encapsulation of textured coatings (e.g. Artex)
• Removal of cement‑based sheets (e.g. old corrugated roofing, redundant gas meter shelves)
• Drilling holes for cable access during rewires (using shadow vacuum)
• Removal of ceramic floor tiles layered over vinyl floor tiles containing white asbestos
• Removal of carpets adhered to chrysotile floor tiles
• Removal of carpet grippers fixed to chrysotile floor tiles and finishing with self‑levelling compound
• General labouring duties as required by business needs

• Asbestos Awareness (UKATA trained)
• Full UK driving licence with a maximum of 5 points
