Castle Vale Renal Unit & Glaxo Renal Unit

An exciting opportunity has arisen for qualified nurses to join our innovative and dynamic Renal Team, based at Castle Vale Renal Unit and Glaxo Renal Unit. This role offers an excellent opportunity for nurses wishing to develop their career within a haemodialysis setting.

Castle Vale Renal Unit

Castle Vale Renal Unit is one of the Trust's nurse-led satellite dialysis units, providing outpatient haemodialysis within a modern Business Park setting. The unit currently operates 36 dialysis stations, delivering care six days per week across three shift patterns.

Glaxo Renal Unit

Glaxo Renal Unit is a haemodialysis service with 33 dialysis stations, providing care to the chronic renal population. In addition, the unit supports acute renal patients on Ward 3 at Heartlands Hospital and provides dialysis to in‑patients where required.

Participation in the emergency out‑of‑hours on‑call haemodialysis service is a requirement of this role.

Main duties of the job

Band 5 Staff Nurse – Haemodialysis

Role Overview

The post holder will work as a Band 5 Staff Nurse within the Haemodialysis Unit, delivering high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care to patients with chronic and acute renal failure. The role requires the nurse to work autonomously within their scope of practice while contributing effectively to the multidisciplinary renal team, ensuring safe, compassionate, and person‑centred care in line with NHS values and Trust policies.

  • Deliver safe, effective haemodialysis treatments in accordance with unit protocols, national standards, and NMC Code
  • Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for dialysis patients
  • Prepare, operate, monitor, and troubleshoot haemodialysis machines and associated equipment
  • Cannulate arteriovenous fistulas and grafts competently (or work towards competency as part of structured training)
  • Monitor patients throughout dialysis, recognising and responding to clinical deterioration or dialysis‑related complications
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and within professional scope of practice
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential nursing documentation and electronic records
  • Provide patient education and emotional support to promote understanding of dialysis treatment and long‑term condition management

  • Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring dignity, privacy, and respect at all times
  • Escalate clinical concerns appropriately and participate in emergency and resuscitation procedures as required
  • Contribute to audits, quality improvement initiatives, and service development within the dialysis unit
Qualifications
  • Level 1 Registered nurse with valid PIN Number
  • Recognition of the accountability of a registered nurse
  • Evidence of a professional portfolio
  • Mentoring Qualifications
  • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development / competence
Experience
  • Good IT skills…
