Job Summary

Junior Charge Nurse – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

Hours:

37.5 hrs per week (minimum 24 hrs). The role involves comprehensive neonatal care, leadership within the multidisciplinary team, and support of the operational workforce.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver care for neonatal surgical and medical patients from 22 weeks gestation, including support for congenital abnormalities such as diaphragmatic hernia and cardiac lesions.
  • Lead and mentor junior nursing staff and students.
  • Collaborate with the Birmingham Local Maternity Service, Neonatal Outreach Team, Maternity Services and the Regional Fetal Medicine Centre.
  • Ensure safe discharge planning and handover within community service pathways.
  • Participate in clinical audits, QIS activities and continuous professional development.
  • Manage assessment, clinical decision-making and escalation when required.
Qualifications and Experience
  • NMC registration part one nursing or midwifery.
  • First degree or equivalent in nursing or midwifery.
  • Experience caring for term and pre‑term neonates in a tertiary unit.
  • Neonatal QIS course or equivalent.
  • Neonatal Life Support provider.
  • Mentorship course or equivalent.
Desirable
  • Level 7 module in Advanced Neonatal Assessment Skill or NIPE.
  • Leadership course or module.
  • NLS Instructor.
  • Experience in IV cannulation.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Clinical decision making based on guidelines and protocols, ability to interpret complex facts.
  • Proficiency with electronic patient record systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of Family Integrated Care.
  • Excellent communication and operational teamwork skills.
