The post holder will be expected to undertake the normal duties and responsibilities associated with being a Respiratory medical professional within a community clinic.
Responsibilities- Maintaining the highest clinical standards at all times and in accordance with accepted good medical practice.
- Making themselves available for virtual and face‑to‑face consultations as expected, following the agreed timetable.
- Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems.
- Assessing the healthcare needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
- In consultation with patients and following evidence‑based best clinical practice, developing treatment plans.
- Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
- Championing the organisation’s clinical governance programme for safe, high‑quality patient care.
- Referring the patient back to their own GP for ongoing management while promoting upskilling.
- Prescribing in accordance with the local prescribing formulary (and generically) whenever clinically appropriate.
- Ensuring that when referrals are made to other medical services, adequate information is given to the receiving personnel for proper assessment.
- Supporting any incident and complaints policies and procedures to ensure proper investigation and appropriate follow‑up action.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality in line with professional standards.
- Working supportively alongside clinical and administrative colleagues to maintain the highest standard of care for all patients.
- Providing support to the HCA, including performance management and clinical supervision where appropriate.
- Engaging with individuals during routine interactions to promote healthier lifestyle choices, in line with the Making Every Contact Count (MECC) approach.
This role is part of a GP‑Led Specialist Respiratory Clinical Review Service, delivering enhanced respiratory care and diagnostics (Spirometry/FeNO) from multiple sites across the city. The service aims to improve asthma and COPD care across Birmingham and promote patient choice and accessibility.
Employment Details- Contract type:
Sessional/Locum or fixed‑term (12 months). - Rate:
Dependent on experience. - Hours:
Multiple sessions available (each session = 4 hours). - Location:
Multiple sites across the city.
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
- Minimum 5 years post‑registration experience.
- Nurse‑led triage, audits, research, and leadership in quality initiatives such as clinical benchmarking.
- At least 2 years recent primary and community nursing experience.
- Nurse‑led management of Respiratory.
- Project management and working with community development initiatives.
- Health‑needs assessment, staff management, leading a team, compiling protocols and clinical guidelines.
- Registered first‑level nurse MSc or equivalent.
- Relevant nursing/health degree.
- ARPT Registered.
- Clinical supervision training and experience.
- Desirable: mentor/teaching qualification, extended/independent nurse prescriber, community nursing specialist qualification, safeguarding Level 3.
