  • Full-Time, Permanent

  • Primary School

  • Location: Birmingham, West Midlands

  • Start Date: ASAP

A welcoming primary school in Birmingham is seeking a caring, reliable and proactive School Nurse to join its team as soon as possible.

This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified nurse who is passionate about children's health, wellbeing and development. The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring pupils feel safe, supported and cared for throughout the school day, helping them to make the most of their time at school.

Working closely with the Headteacher, teachers, support staff, parents and external healthcare professionals, you will provide essential medical care, manage day-to-day health concerns and help maintain a safe and healthy school environment.

The ideal candidate will be approachable, compassionate and confident in responding to children's medical needs, with the ability to remain calm and professional in a busy primary school setting.

The Role

As School Nurse, you will be responsible for supporting the health and wellbeing of pupils across the school, providing appropriate care and ensuring that medical needs are managed effectively.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing first aid and responding to illness, accidents and minor injuries during the school day.

  • Assessing pupils who become unwell and determining when further medical attention may be required.

  • Administering prescribed medication in line with school policies, parental consent and relevant procedures.

  • Supporting pupils with ongoing medical conditions, allergies, asthma, diabetes and other healthcare needs.

  • Maintaining accurate and confidential medical records, accident reports and health documentation.

  • Developing, reviewing and implementing individual healthcare plans in collaboration with families and relevant healthcare professionals.

  • Communicating with parents and carers regarding pupils' health concerns, injuries, medication and ongoing medical needs.

  • Working collaboratively with teachers and school support staff to ensure pupils receive appropriate care and support.

  • Promoting good hygiene, healthy lifestyles and positive health awareness among pupils.

  • Supporting the management of medical emergencies and ensuring appropriate procedures are followed.

  • Monitoring medical supplies and ensuring first aid equipment is available, accessible and appropriately maintained.

  • Supporting staff with guidance on pupils' medical needs, emergency procedures and relevant healthcare arrangements.

  • Maintaining confidentiality and ensuring sensitive medical information is handled appropriately.

  • Contributing to a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where every child can feel secure and ready to learn.

Working Within a Primary School Environment

Working with primary-aged children requires patience, understanding and the ability to provide reassurance in a calm and friendly manner.

The successful candidate will understand that children may feel anxious or frightened when they are unwell or injured. You will help pupils feel comfortable, explain care in an age-appropriate way and provide reassurance while ensuring their medical needs are addressed appropriately.

You will work closely with school staff and families to support pupils with both short-term illnesses and longer-term medical conditions, helping ensure that health needs do not unnecessarily prevent children from participating in school life.

The role also involves recognising when a child may need additional support and following the school's safeguarding procedures where concerns arise.

What We Are Looking For

The successful candidate will be a compassionate and organised healthcare professional who enjoys working with children and understands the importance of health and wellbeing in an educational setting.

You will ideally have:

  • A recognised nursing qualification and current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration.

  • Previous experience in a nursing, healthcare or paediatric setting.

  • Experience providing first aid and responding to medical concerns confidently and appropriately.

  • Knowledge of common childhood illnesses, allergies and ongoing medical conditions.

  • The ability to remain calm, reassuring and professional when dealing with emergencies or distressed pupils.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when working with children, parents, carers and school staff.
