Role Description

The Assistant Manager role is a full‑time, on‑site position based at our Melbick's Garden Centre Birmingham location. This role supports the Store Manager in overseeing daily shop operations, including supervising team members, organizing staff schedules, and maintaining high standards of product quality and presentation. The Assistant Manager helps manage stock levels, monitors food safety and hygiene practices, and ensures compliance with company procedures.

Day‑to‑day responsibilities include engaging with customers, resolving issues, driving sales, and supporting promotional activities. The role also involves coaching team members, assisting with training, and contributing to continuous improvement in service, efficiency, and profitability.

Qualifications
  • Retail and food service operations skills, including stock management, merchandising, and basic understanding of food safety and hygiene standards.
  • People management and leadership skills, such as supervising staff, supporting training, and fostering a positive, inclusive team environment.
  • Customer service and communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with customers, handle inquiries or complaints, and provide product guidance.
  • Organizational and problem‑solving skills, including managing priorities in a busy shop environment and responding effectively to operational challenges.
  • Basic numerical and cash‑handling skills, with experience in using point‑of‑sale systems and supporting daily financial procedures.
  • Previous experience in retail, hospitality, or food‑related environments at supervisory level is highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of butchery or farm shop products is an advantage, along with an interest in quality food and local produce.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and peak trading periods, and to stand for extended periods in a busy shop setting.
