Position: Security Officer (Saturday Only)

Security Officer (Saturday Only) – Grade B

Salary: £28,598 – £33,699. This is a permanent position that requires a formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review.

Work schedule:

8 hours per week, Saturday only, part of rota including weekends and bank holidays, typically working early mornings or late evenings.

Role Overview

The Security Officer assists the Library of Birmingham in providing a service to the public, staff, and visitors, operating 24/7. Responsibilities include maintaining both physical and procedural security, acting as the main point of contact for day‑to‑day security issues, resolving issues and management requests in a timely manner, and using initiative to improve customer experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor life safety systems.
  • Operate the Fire Evacuation lift in emergency.
  • Enforce the Libraries and Museums Act 1964 byelaws.
  • Follow library policy and council procedures.
  • Work in the Control Room operating CCTV, fire and intruder alarm, lift control, and other software systems.
  • Be computer literate and enter data into the computer, prepare reports.
  • Aware of counter‑terrorism issues, mitigation measures, and PROTECT duty (Martyn’s Law).
  • Open and close the building.
  • Digitally record incidents.
  • Complete regular patrols.
  • Monitor CCTV and work as a team to provide a safe environment for library users.
  • Perform dynamic risk assessments and use problem‑solving skills to resolve issues, liaising with management as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • First‑aid certification.
  • Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence (CCTV licence desirable).
  • Computer literacy and ability to enter data and write reports.
