Empowering individuals through compassionate listening and support
Volunteer Mentors at First Light offer a short-term, telephone-based listening service for individuals affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence (DASV) who are assessed as safe and at low risk. This service is designed to empower individuals by providing a safe, confidential space to be heard, validated, and supported, without judgment or pressure.
Mentors are highly trained volunteers who give their time generously to support others. They offer:
- Up to six one-hour sessions (with the possibility of extending to ten, depending on individual needs)
- A consistent, compassionate presence during weekday hours (9am–5pm, with last call at 4pm)
- A non-counselling, non-advocacy listening service focused on emotional validation
- A trauma-informed approach with full safeguarding awareness
Mentors do not complete risk assessments or safety plans, but they are trained to recognise escalation and act appropriately in consultation with their line manager.
Some individuals simply need someone to talk to — someone who will listen without offering advice or tasks. This service is ideal for those who:
- Want to talk about the impact of DASV
- Prefer a safe, impartial space to reflect
- Are not currently in crisis but still benefit from emotional support
- “Can I have my mentor’s phone number?”
- “Can I be mentored evenings or weekends?”
- “Can I have more sessions?”
- “Can I be mentored again after I’ve finished?”
- “Can you speak with a professional on my behalf?”
The answer to many of these is guided by safeguarding and service boundaries, but mentors always aim to be flexible and supportive within those limits.
Feedback from those mentored has shown that being truly listened to by someone knowledgeable, impartial, and kind can be incredibly empowering. This service helps individuals:
- Feel validated and less alone
- Reflect on their experiences in a safe space
- Build emotional resilience
- Take steps toward recovery without feeling rushed or judged
This service is available to adults (18+) living in Cornwall who are affected by DASV, assessed as low risk, and referred internally through Safer Futures at First Light.
