About the Role

We are recruiting for an experienced Youth Justice Practitioner / Case Manager to join Birmingham's Youth Justice Service.

The role is focused on delivering services that meet the individual needs of children and young people, their families and caregivers, with the aim of reducing offending and preventing reoffending.

You will work across the Youth Justice Service, Birmingham Children's Trust and wider partner agencies to ensure young people have access to appropriate and effective interventions. The service takes a restorative and trauma-informed approach, supporting young people to develop a pro-social identity, build positive futures and recover from experiences of trauma.

Key Responsibilities

Contribute to and participate in the work of the Youth Justice Service.

Plan and implement diversion from court programmes where appropriate.

Manage work arising from referral orders, referral order panels and community-based actions.

Effectively manage and monitor young people progressing through the court process.

Compile and present Pre-Sentence Reports (PSRs) and other reports in line with National Standards.

Prepare reports for referral order panels and other relevant proceedings.

Act as Case Manager for court orders where appropriate.

Provide supervision for young people subject to Youth Rehabilitation Orders (YROs) in line with National Standards.

Manage and supervise young people through care and licence supervision following custody.

Contribute to remand and Bail Support Services.

Develop and deliver imaginative and creative intervention programmes for young people serving community sentences.

Use a restorative approach that addresses the needs of victims and supports rehabilitation.

Work collaboratively with young people, families, caregivers, partner agencies and community stakeholders.

Ensure consultation with young people, families and the local community is central to service delivery.

Identify appropriate resources to support the implementation of community sentences.

Contribute to identifying needs and measuring outcomes for young people, families and the wider community.

Contribute to the delivery of the Youth Justice Plan and associated performance measures.

Maintain effective communication across Youth Justice Services.

Contribute to quality assurance and effective service improvement.

Promote anti-oppressive practice when working with young people and families.

Maintain awareness of new legislation, policies and developments within Youth Justice and related areas.

Complete all administrative duties associated with the effective delivery of Youth Justice processes.

Participate in supervision, training and professional development.

About You

We are looking for a practitioner who has experience working with young people involved in the criminal justice system and who can build positive, professional relationships with children, families and partner agencies.

You should be confident in:

Managing complex Youth Justice caseloads.

Assessing needs, risks and offending behaviour.

Developing and implementing effective intervention plans.

Working with young people subject to court orders.

Preparing professional reports, including Pre-Sentence Reports.

Working within National Standards and Youth Justice processes.

Multi-agency working and partnership collaboration.

Delivering restorative and rehabilitative interventions.

Managing challenging situations and engaging young people who may be reluctant to participate.

Promoting positive outcomes and reducing the risk of reoffending.

Working in a trauma-informed and anti-oppressive way.

Maintaining accurate records and meeting statutory requirements.

Supporting young people to avoid unnecessary progression through the criminal justice system.

Court & Sentencing

Managing young people involved in court proceedings and preparing high-quality Pre-Sentence Reports and other reports.

Community Sentences

Delivering and monitoring interventions for young people subject to community sentences and Youth Rehabilitation Orders.

Custody & Resettlement

Providing through-care and licence supervision for young people entering and leaving custody.

Restorative Justice

Supporting rehabilitation and addressing the impact of offending on victims and communities.

Multi-Agency Working

Working collaboratively across the Youth Justice Service, Birmingham Children's Trust and wider agencies to ensure young people receive appropriate support.

Professional Development

The postholder will be expected to participate in:

Regular supervision.

Staff training and professional development.

Quality assurance processes.

Good practice initiatives.

Service performance and outcome monitoring.
