Job OverviewThe K-12 School Counselor provides support to the instructional process by managing student placement, offering information and recommendations to parents and students, and assisting with goal development for student achievement. This role is vital in promoting student success and supporting their transition from school to career, training, or further education.
Supervisory RelationshipReports to:
School Principal
- Student Support: Counsel students, parents, and guardians to promote success in academic, career, and personal/social areas.
- Counseling Programs: Design and facilitate group and individual counseling based on data-driven needs.
- Special Programs: Develop programs like career nights and financial aid workshops to aid student transitions.
- Progress Monitoring: Track student progress and intervene as needed.
- Application Assistance: Help students with scholarship, college, and financial aid applications.
- Documentation: Maintain reports, activities, and correspondence.
- Information Presentation: Communicate updates and gather feedback from stakeholders.
- Research: Stay updated on program requirements like financial aid and college admissions.
- Class Scheduling: Arrange student classes to meet graduation and college eligibility criteria.
- Program Supervision: Oversee programs like scholarships, peer counseling, and ESL.
- Guidance Curriculum: Deliver a social-emotional learning curriculum aligned with BPS expectations.
- Classroom Management: Maintain a positive learning environment.
- Section 504 Coordination: Support students with disabilities through building-level processes.
- Adhere to School Policies: Follow all policies and procedures.
- Attendance: Maintain prompt and consistent attendance.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills: Assessment, record-keeping, project management, software proficiency.
Knowledge: Child development stages, interpreting technical info, technical writing, persuasive speaking.
Abilities: Schedule activities, analyze data, work independently and with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, handle interruptions.
Additional RequirementsWork under limited supervision, lead and guide others, utilize resources, and impact organizational services.
Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and fine motor skills. Work involves sitting (40%), walking (30%), standing (30%), with minimal temperature variation.
Experience: Relevant experience within a specialized field required.
Education: Master's degree in a related area.
Certificates: Valid ND teaching certificate, maintain relevant licenses.
Clearances: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
FLSA Status: Exempt.
Salary Grade: Teacher Salary Schedule.
