Position: POWER MODELING ANALYST OR ENGINEER (LEVEL DOE)

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is open to varying levels of experience. This position is located at our Headquarters location in Bismarck, ND. The Power Modeling Engineer/Analyst will develop and optimize power system models across generation, transmission, and distribution networks. This role leverages advanced simulation tools, load forecasting, and resource integration strategies to ensure grid reliability and efficiency, while analyzing market strategies to quantify system impacts and support energy position development.

Responsibilities include maintaining and modifying complex inputs for market models, coordinating with multiple departments to interpret outputs, and using back casting to improve accuracy. The engineer/analyst will project energy revenues and costs, predict generation from Basin Electric facilities, integrate long- and short-term power contracts, and anticipate balancing needs. Model outputs will be incorporated into financial forecasting to support both long-term scenario planning and short-term projections, driving sustainable energy solutions and future grid modernization.

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES
  • Modify and maintain complex inputs for electricity markets based on pertinent market research and understanding of LMP’s, transmission market data, including supply and demand, transmission congestion, capacity allocation, and pricing mechanisms within the multiple markets Basin Electric transacts in.
  • Assist in the analysis of market strategies using market simulation software of Encompass, AURORA, or similar platforms, to identify and quantify impacts of strategy considered.
  • Assist in the coordination of monthly generation modeling. Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather relevant data and inputs for market analysis.
