Job Overview

Applications are invited for the post of a NHS Locum Consultant in Cardiology, for a 12-month fixed term contract. This is an exciting opportunity in an area with high clinical demand.

The post will consist of 10 PAs to deliver independent cardiology services to inpatients and outpatients. The 10 PAs will be flexible but will typically comprise 8 to 8.5 direct clinical care (DCC) sessions and 2 to 1.5 supporting professional activities (SPA) sessions per week.

The majority of the appointee’s time will be spent on clinical duties. In addition, the appointee will be expected to take part in the formal teaching and ongoing audit programmes within the directorate as well as a full range of management duties commensurate with this role.

The post holder will be based on the acute hospital site and will support care in the community, including intermediate care beds and primary care colleagues. They will also be expected to take part in a Cardiologist Consultant on‑call rota.

The post requires daily clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of inpatients, provision of immediate care to deteriorating patients (including initial resuscitation when appropriate), appropriate referrals, and support for safe discharge and follow‑up. Local and national guidance must be followed and contributed to.

Other duties may be allocated by the Clinical Director to ensure proper care of patients and management of the department (mutually agreed).

Post‑holders are expected to gain and maintain certification in ALS or equivalent. In cardiac arrest or critically ill situations, they may be expected to assume a team leadership role following appropriate guidelines.

In exceptional circumstances, additional duties outside normal rostered hours may be required to ensure essential patient care, and the post holder may deputise for absent colleagues. A mentoring process will be in place to support professional and personal development.

• Outpatient clinics including Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinics
• CCU and Cardiology Ward rounds
• Cath Lab sessions
• In‑reach to AMU and out‑reach to medical wards
• Specialist sessions based on experience and expertise (echocardiography, stress echocardiography, TOE, etc.)
• Timely review of patient results and investigations
• Preparation of correspondence, reports and other documents as required
• Active role in teaching junior doctors
• Participation in clinical audit
• Additional duties allocated by the Clinical Director as needed

• Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice
• MB ChB or equivalent
• MRCP (UK) or equivalent
• Higher degree in Cardiology Specific Training

• Relevant Cardiology courses and meetings
• Attendance at radiation protection course

• Clinical duties including assessment, diagnosis and care planning of medical patients ensuring safe discharge and follow‑up
• Clinical practice in Cardiology
• Ability to lead when appropriate
• Ability to work independently
• Experience with in devices, imaging and/or heart failure

• Echocardiography
• Teaching and training of other doctors and allied professions
• Clear written and spoken communication with other professionals
• Ability to clinically assess published research and incorporate it into practice
• Knowledge and experience of multidisciplinary clinical audit principles and practice
• BSE Accreditation

• Cardiology, with sub‑specialist interest in complex devices and pacing/lead extractions
• Other general medical specialties

• Ability to organise workload and arrange priorities
• Ability to plan strategically and exercise sound judgement when faced with conflicting pressures

• Work effectively and efficiently under pressure, independently and in a team
• Experience in patient education and counselling

• Access to private transport

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
