Job summary

Applications are invited for a substantive post within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. Candidates must have full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the Specialist Register of the GMC under Intensive Care Medicine.

The post holder will:

• Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Department.
• Participate in the critical care consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleagues' absence.
• Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
• Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
• Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources
• To provide an anaesthetic service as a member of the Department of Anaesthesia. This will be across both Preston and Chorley sites depending on Directorate service requirements.
• To undertake pre-operative assessment of patients as appropriate, together with post-operative management and follow-up of patients in appropriate cases.
• To undertake weekly theatre sessions as allocated of which a proportion will be delivered flexibly over each week, to maintain the high level of anaesthetic service delivery required by the Trust. These may include evening sessions, or, rarely, a weekend session (by mutual agreement).

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides a wide range of general hospital services to around 370,000 people from the Chorley, South Ribble and Preston areas. We are one of the largest Critical Care Units in the Northwest of England, admitting over 1600 patients every year. In addition we provide specialist services to approximately 1.5 million people from Lancashire and South Cumbria, and we are a designated Major Trauma Centre.

The Trust proves coaching services from experiences members of the human resources team, and new consultants are allocated a mentor to ensure a seamless transition into the consultant workforce.

The Critical Care unit is the base for 'The Perioperative Firm' of Medical Students. Up to 36 students a year are based in the unit for 4 weeks a time, spending some time in theatres learning skills, as part of their Heart, Lungs and Blood module of year 3.

• MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent Primary Medical Qualification
• Registration with the GMC, with a full licence to practise OR eligible for registration within six months of interview.
• Eligible to be included on the GMC with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) in ICM & Anaesthetics

• Higher qualifications; MA, MSc or MD/PhD
• Hold the FFICM or EDIC
• Extended complementary skills e.g. Echo, USS accreditation

• Full training in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthetics

• Evidence of Clinical Leadership
• Evidence of commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/continuous improvement development in service

• Demonstrate with examples clear leadership and successful quality improvement in Critical Care/Anaesthetics
• Evidence of involvement or ideally leadership in QI work

• Proven effective communication skills with examples.
• Good organisation skills with examples.
• Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
• Resident within 30 minutes travel time to Chorley/Preston.
