Overview

EQUANS is looking for a Lead Mechanical Fitter/Engineer to work on our Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital contract. This is a permanent, full‑time role (40 hours per week) with a competitive salary and benefits package.

Responsibilities
  • To undertake a proactive role in carrying out maintenance, repairs and inspection of mechanical building services, all in accordance with relevant standards, operational procedures, legislation and guidance.
  • Represent EQUANS in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on mechanical and associated building services in accordance with the PPM programme and personal competence and training.
  • Respond in a timely manner to ad‑hoc breakdown requests as identified by supervisor or manager, or as required by site contract.
  • Assist in carrying out installation work involved in minor upgrading and adaptation works.
  • Assist in carrying out systematic fault‑finding in a logical and safe manner on malfunctioning equipment.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with safe working practices within statutory and company guidelines.
  • Safely operate all types of access equipment, hand and power tools in accordance with health & safety and manufacturers’ guidelines.
  • Ensure the correct use of personal protective equipment and adherence to health & safety and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain records as and when appropriate and as required, whether written or electronic.
  • Willingness to assist and work flexibly with other trades/colleagues.
  • After a qualifying period take part in the call‑out/standby rota.
  • Ensure liaison with wards and departments as required, ensuring minimum disruption whilst carrying out work.
  • Undertake training where necessary to learn other skills and to maintain and develop the requirements of the service.
  • Carry out risk assessments on‑site as instructed by supervisor or manager.
  • Collaborate and cooperate with partners and colleagues to deliver a customer‑focused service.
  • Use initiative to make appropriate decisions, including when working out of hours.
  • Diligently complete all required job cards and other work‑related paperwork to the required standard.
  • Complete work within the allotted time frames.
  • Carry out any other identified tasks commensurate with the role.
Additional Skills
  • Technical issues with steam boilers and related equipment.
  • Technical advice and problem solving on water systems and heating issues.
  • Laundry/lifecycle meeting, planning, input.
Impact

The Maintenance Engineer carries out planned preventive and reactive maintenance tasks across the healthcare estate. The position ensures statutory and contractual obligations are met while providing an excellent service to our customers. The operative is part of the facilities maintenance team, contributing to the effective and efficient operation of the estate and associated engineering systems, supporting the delivery of healthcare and extending the lifecycle of vital equipment on the contract.

Complexity

The Maintenance Engineer undertakes duties for which they are trained and competent. An Estates management team based on site can offer specialised technical advice and liaise with appropriate levels of management to facilitate specialist isolations necessary to undertake certain engineering works.

Qualifications or Required Experience
  • Previously worked within a maintenance environment.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Services or equivalent.
  • Experience of working on or with AHU’s, FCU’s, LTHW, pumps, pipework, valves, chilled and portable water systems and water hygiene systems.
  • Pipe fitting experience (desirable).
  • PPM & reactive work.
  • Authorised person mechanical systems.
  • Worked on steam systems (desirable).
  • Work on plumbing systems.
