Overview

JOB SUMMARY:

Collect routine and specialty testing patient specimens and ensure proper patient identification and labeling of specimens. Provide excellent customer service on the phone and in person to all patients, doctors and other medical staff. Assists providers in care, medical record documentation, and treatment of patients. Obtain and process doctors orders. Work well under pressure. Follow all applicable hospital / laboratory policies and procedures.

Must be able to prioritize specimens (STAT, ASAP, Routine, Pre-op, etc.), multitask, and be flexible in order to accommodate the needs of the laboratory and clinic.

• Be proficient and timely in the collection of blood samples and other body fluids, ensuring proper patient identification and labeling of samples.
• Welcomes patients by greeting them, in person or on the phone
• Prepares patients for health care visit by directing and or accompanying them to the exam room; provides examination gowns or shorts; assists them to position themselves, arranges exam room, instruments, supplies and equipment.
• Supports patient care by assisting providers during exam; completes records by recording examination, treatment and test results. Relays treatment plan to checkout receptionist.
• Follow all applicable hospital / laboratory policies and procedures to include, but not limited to patient identification, specimen collection, specimen rejection, specimen labeling, and specimen stability.
• Be proficient in the utilization of order of draw when collecting blood specimens.
• Knowledge of ordering, stocking and rotating laboratory supplies.
• Provide competent and quality clinical care to all patients.
• Adherence by staff to all policies and procedures to include the employee handbook.
• Provides age appropriate care.
• Reporting of patient and staff incidents through the occurrence report process.
• Monitoring and management of formal complaints.
• Comply with standard precautions by using personal protective equipment as required.
• Develop, utilize, and maintain professional relationships within our organization and its affiliates.
• Maintain effective working relationships between nursing, clerical, medical and allied health staff.
• Performs miscellaneous tasks that promote smooth operations.
• Other duties as deemed necessary.

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma or higher. Current BLS Certification. Valid drivers license.

Experience:

Phlebotomy course and/or phlebotomy experience preferred.

Equipment/Technology:
Experience with computers and office equipment, required.

Language/Communication:
Must be able to read and communicate (oral and written) effectively in English. Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely.
