The primary function of this position is to operate a sanitation collection truck and perform general maintenance work on city streets and rights‑of‑ways. This is an entry‑level role that may include other maintenance duties within the City Public Works Department.
The job is performed outdoors, often in adverse weather, and may involve the use of power tools, heavy equipment, and exposure to hazardous and allergenic materials. Working hours are on‑call and may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Operate a sanitation collection truck on an assigned route.
- Ensure all containers on the route are emptied and contents transported and disposed of at an appropriate transfer station or disposal site.
- Perform assembly, delivery, pickup, and repair work on collection containers.
- Perform routine and minor maintenance on sanitation trucks and other equipment.
- Operate snow‑plowing and sanding trucks and equipment.
- Perform scheduled and assigned maintenance, repair, and service work on city streets, rights‑of‑ways, sidewalks, curbs, alleys, medians, and retention basins.
- Maintain road rights‑of‑ways, seasonally operating dump trucks or other light trucks, front‑end loaders, pavers, pavement rollers, sweepers, snow‑plowing and sanding trucks, and other required equipment.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, county, city, and other applicable public health, environmental, and safety standards.
- Assist in equipment maintenance and perform other related duties as required.
- Idaho driver’s license with Class B CDL.
- Equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices.
- Methods, techniques, and equipment for collection and emptying of garbage and trash containers.
- Operation of power equipment, including but not limited to collection trucks, grounds keeping equipment, dump trucks, bobcats, loaders, pavers, rollers, snow‑plowing and sanding trucks, and related equipment as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalency required; two (2) years of experience in equipment operation or general labor tasks preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Accurately follow written and oral instructions.
- Operate hand tools and heavy equipment.
- Operate standard office equipment, including a computer with appropriate program applications.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors, the public, and other employees.
- Clarity of speech and hearing sufficient to discern verbal instructions and alarm and warning systems.
- Visual acuity sufficient to comprehend written work instructions and work orders.
- Manual dexterity to operate motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and a variety of power and hand tools.
- Strength to lift and carry objects up to 80 pounds.
- Personal mobility, stamina, flexibility, and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, and other physical exertions in an outdoor environment, including extremes of heat and cold.
