Reporting to the Associate Director of Design in the Facilities Design and Construction department in the Division of Facilities, the Design Review Architect will:

• Assist the Associate Director of Design in the design review and approval process for minor modifications, non‑capital, and capital projects to ensure alignment with the university’s mission, vision, strategic goals, and initiatives.
• Work toward the enhancement of accessibility as it relates to the physical campus.
• Provide guidance related to campus design principles and the Design and Construction Standards Manual to design consultants and university user groups during project meetings and document reviews.

• Strong judgment and critical thinking skills, leveraging experience to achieve objectives.
• Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
• Composure and professionalism in high‑pressure or conflict situations.
• Ability to foster teamwork and deliver exceptional client service in diverse environments.

• Advanced degree in Architecture, or Bachelor of Architecture along with work experience equivalent to an advanced degree.
• Registration as a Professional Architect. Current registration in Virginia or demonstrated ability to be registered within 12 months of employment.
• A minimum of five years’ experience as an architect.
• Understanding of Historic Preservation and The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Proficiency with current office computer software including word processing and spreadsheets. Proficient in the use of design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).

• Experience working in a university setting.
• Experience with Commonwealth of Virginia (or other public agency) directives and higher education facilities requirements.
• Knowledge of preservation architecture. Proficiency in accessible design.
• Understanding of sustainability initiatives and experience working on LEED accredited projects.
• Familiarity with AIM project management software.
