Job Description
The Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC) Academic Advisor will be cross-trained in the Building Construction (BC) and Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) programs serving undergraduate students.
The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be interpreted as all-inclusive:
Provide academic and career advising services to approximately 300 BC and CEM undergraduate studentsDeliver accurate information and advice to students about majors/minors and course optionsIdentify educational and career options appropriate for each student and assist with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implicationsMonitor academic progress of studentsIdentify current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g. study skills, tutoring, counseling) and refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistanceSupport class scheduling, enrollment, and systems related to class registrationMaintain student files and records; document all pertinent student informationInterpret and explain college and university policies and proceduresParticipate in recruiting activities for the university, college, and department, including but not limited to new student orientation, new student welcome, change of major information sessions, open house, course request group advising, plan of study workshops, etc.Communicate in a highly professional manner with department faculty, university administrators, researchers, staff, students, and campus visitorsRequired Qualifications
Master’s degree in educational administration, student development, or related field from an accredited university or a bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or related field, with training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.Experience working in a student-focused collegiate setting (i.e. academic advising, classroom instruction, counseling, etc.)Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality.Experience in and/or knowledge pertaining to university operations, policies, and procedures in areas such as orientation, course registration, degree and graduation requirements.Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of NACADA academic advising pillars, competencies, and standardsExperience with student information systems, such as Banner, People Soft, Starfish, Navigate and degree audit softwareDemonstrated ability to communicate effectively and present information clearly in one-on-one and group settingsAbility to occasionally work an alternative schedule to facilitate advising and new student programming/events as well as travel for recruiting purposes as needed.Strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, database management, and spreadsheetsExcellent communication and presentation skills.Overtime Status
