Job Description

The Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech (http://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry with a start date of August 10, 2027, at its Blacksburg, VA, campus. The successful candidate will have a strong background in algebraic geometry, algebraic combinatorics, geometric representation theory, or related areas. Research interests may include, but are not limited to, classical and quantum Schubert calculus, toric and tropical geometry, and combinatorial Hodge theory.

This position builds on our existing strengths in algebraic combinatorics and will expand our presence in areas of algebraic geometry where combinatorial structures and computational methods play a central role. The hire will also contribute to our long-term goal of strengthening and broadening the department’s research profile in geometry and topology.

Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Mathematics is anticipated; however, exceptional candidates may be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Mathematics. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field by the time of appointment and have an active research program in the area of the search. Evidence of a strong research record, including successful postdoctoral experience, is preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a distinguished research program and to provide effective instruction and advising to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students.

Additional responsibilities include travel to attend conferences and meetings, as well as service to the department, college, university and professional community. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, curriculum development, or outreach initiatives with other members of the Virginia Tech faculty.

Virginia Tech is committed to supporting the success of its faculty members through policies that include the modification of duties, the extension of tenure clocks, mentoring, proposal-writing guidance, and dual-career accommodations, depending on individual circumstances. Interviewed candidates will meet with a work-life liaison for a confidential conversation about the details of these policies.

The person appointed will have the following responsibilities:
- the development and maintenance of a distinguished research program with the potential for interdisciplinary impact;
- the continuing development of their own scholarly activities, professional capabilities, and service to the profession;
- active and effective participation in undergraduate and graduate instruction and student mentoring;
- active and effective participation in department and university administrative governance; and
- adherence to the responsibilities of the faculty as described by the faculty handbook .html

Required Qualifications

To receive consideration, applicants must have:
- a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field at the time of appointment; and
- an active research program in combinatorial algebraic geometry, broadly construed.

Preferred Qualifications

It is desired that candidates have:
- a record of achievement, as might be demonstrated during a postdoctoral or previous faculty appointment;
- a research program which draws on topics from algebraic geometry, algebraic combinatorics, Schubert Calculus, toric and tropical geometry, and related areas;
- vision, creativity, and leadership skills relevant to research, instruction, and/or mentoring;
- demonstrated effectiveness or interest and potential in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
