Job Description

Reporting to the Building Trades Supervisor, the Trades Mechanic is responsible for performing tasks in the building trades (carpentry, masonry and painting) in support of building maintenance on the VT campus and assisting plumbing and electrical trades as requested.

Required Qualifications
  • Journeyman level experience in the installation, repair and maintenance practices, equipment, and materials used in one or more skilled trades including carpentry, masonry, and painting.
  • Experience with interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, sketches, specification records, and operating and maintenance manuals.
  • Record keeping and inventory experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Candidate must be able to perform routine institutional painting tasks.
  • Ability to recognize and understand industry terminologies of multiple trades.
  • Ability to use a computer, keep accurate and complete records.
  • Ability to perform work with minimal margin of error and work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, works as an effective team member, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
  • Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more; maneuver materials up and down stairs; climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • This position is designated as Emergency Personnel. May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
  • Must have health and safety medical check.
  • Must be able to use a respirator.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a large commercial or educational setting.
  • Experience in painting and glazing.
  • Experience in a work order/inventory management system.
  • Basic computer skills.

Pay Band 3

Overtime Status Non-Exempt:
Eligible for overtime

Appointment Type Regular

Salary Information $40,000-$50,000; commensurate with experience

Hours per week 40

Additional Information

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.
