Senior Cosmetic Chemist; Formulation

Our client, a leading innovator in the personal care industry, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Cosmetic Chemist specializing in formulation to join their Research & Development team in Bloemfontein, Free State. This role is crucial for the development of novel and high-performing cosmetic and personal care products. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in chemistry, extensive hands-on experience in cosmetic formulation, and a deep understanding of ingredient functionality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

• Formulate and develop a wide range of cosmetic and personal care products, including skincare, haircare, and color cosmetics.
• Research and evaluate new raw materials, ingredients, and technologies for product innovation.
• Develop stable, efficacious, and aesthetically pleasing formulations according to project briefs and market requirements.
• Conduct bench-scale formulation, optimization, and troubleshooting.
• Perform and document stability studies, compatibility testing, and micro-efficacy testing.
• Oversee scale-up activities from bench to pilot plant and manufacturing scale.
• Collaborate closely with Marketing, Regulatory, and Manufacturing departments to ensure successful product development and launch.
• Prepare detailed formulation records, specifications, and technical reports.
• Stay current with industry trends, scientific literature, and regulatory changes (e.g., SAHPRA guidelines).
• Ensure all formulations and development processes comply with quality standards and safety regulations.
• Analyze competitor products and identify opportunities for innovation.
• Provide technical support to manufacturing and quality assurance teams.
• Contribute to the company's intellectual property portfolio.
• Mentor junior chemists and technicians.

• Master's degree or PhD in Cosmetic Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
• Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in cosmetic formulation development within the personal care industry.
• Proven expertise in formulating various product types (e.g., emulsions, suspensions, solutions, gels).
• Comprehensive knowledge of cosmetic ingredients, their functions, safety profiles, and regulatory status.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and analytical techniques relevant to cosmetic testing.
• Strong understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical data effectively.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in technical documentation and report writing.
• Familiarity with the South African cosmetic market and consumer preferences in the Free State is an advantage.
• Experience with natural, organic, or sustainable cosmetic formulations is a plus.
