The Opportunity The Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) seeks an accomplished academic physician leader to serve as the founding Chief of a new Division of General Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine. Two new divisions are being established through the strategic restructuring of the current Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, the second being the new ‘Division of Aging, Geriatric Medicine, and Palliative Care’.
This restructuring is a deliberate investment in focused leadership intended to sustain and accelerate academic growth and excellence in the Department’s generalist and acute care missions.
The founding Chief will lead approximately 280 faculty members organized into three sections, each with its own strategic plan and identity, and will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Medicine. This is a rare opportunity to define, from the outset, the structure, culture, and strategic direction of one of the largest general medicine and hospital medicine enterprises in American academic medicine.

An Overview of Sections and Research Centers
Division faculty have the opportunity to engage in the service, research, and education missions of the Department and IUSM. Faculty practice and teach across the full continuum of undergraduate and graduate medical education and hold impactful Departmental and School educational leadership roles, including the internal medicine residency program directorship, multiple Key Clinician Educator appointments, and clerkship and course leadership positions.
Research faculty maintain deep partnerships with various Research Centers including the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Health Services Research at the Regenstrief Institute, the Center for Health Communication and Information at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, the IU Center for Biomedical Ethics, the Center for Global Health, and the Regenstrief Center for Health Equity Research at Eskenazi Health. Researchers have consistently secured close to $3M dollars in federal and non-federal funding annually over the last three years.
Examples of current research include diabetes prevention, improving the care of individuals with rare diseases, implementation of survivorship care plans, and the deployment of large-scale decision aids to guide colorectal cancer screening.
- Section of Hospital Medicine (approximately 180 faculty members). The largest section in the Department, with faculty engaged in clinical care, scholarship and research, and teaching in hospital medicine care across IU Health, Eskenazi Health, and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.
- Section of General Internal Medicine (approximately 15 faculty members). The academic home for general internal medicine, including research faculty in health services research, biomedical informatics, global health, health equity, and medical ethics, and faculty who hold key educational leadership roles across the Department of Medicine and IUSM.
- Section of Primary Care Internal Medicine (approximately 85 faculty members). Ambulatory internal medicine practice and general internal medicine care is an area of critical workforce need statewide and a stated development priority of the division’s faculty. Faculty provide general internal medicine and medicine-pediatrics care across IU Health, Eskenazi Health, and the Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center.
