The Eskenazi School houses 14 different areas in art, design, and merchandising, encouraging collaborative and interdisciplinary learning. This position oversees all aspects of the Fine Arts and Kirkwood fabrication labs and the new print center to support the academic and curricular needs of the school.
Department‑Specific Responsibilities- Oversee the general operation of instructional digital fabrication tools, including printing, 3‑dimensional (3D) printing, plotting, cutting, and engraving equipment.
- Serve as the point of contact for research and instructional use of fabrication lab and print center facilities.
- Provide technical assistance to students and faculty using the fabrication labs and print center for design and construction of art projects.
- Develop safety protocols, standards, and training for all equipment.
- Provide non‑credit instruction on the practice and use of all equipment.
- Build, maintain, and mentor a staff of hourly lab technicians.
- Manage the purchase of equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Maintain equipment, schedule repairs, troubleshoot malfunctions, and manage vendors.
- Maintain software and IT relevant to equipment operation.
- Collaborate with other Instructional Shops managers on projects.
- Manage activities and support students and faculty in educational resource facilities.
- Design learning experiences that support faculty and student education and development outcomes.
- Operate instruments and machinery, assist users, and provide instruction and training for safe operation.
- Develop instructional and training materials for proper and safe use of the facility and equipment.
- Document issues and report to appropriate parties.
- Ensure compliance with internal and external policies and procedures, including certifications and accreditation.
- Create reports on activities to measure operational success and aid strategic decisions.
- Perform administrative duties such as ensuring security, monitoring budget, and managing inventory.
- Stay current by attending training, conferences, and participating in professional organizations.
- Provide guidance or oversee hourly staff.
- Required: Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a related field)
- Preferred: Additional education may substitute for experience, and work experience beyond the minimum may substitute for education.
- Related digital fabrication shop experience.
- Related print production experience.
- Proficient written and verbal communication.
- High degree of professionalism.
- Time management and priority setting skills.
- Commitment to quality.
- Flexibility to work in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
- Willingness to acquire knowledge in area of specialty.
The role requires effective communication, mobility to operate laboratory equipment, moving objects up to 25 pounds, and occasional work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.
Location & SalaryIndiana University (IU) Bloomington campus, Bloomington, Indiana. Salary: $44,000 – $45,000 annually.
