Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic

Primary Responsibilities- Assists in major and minor overhaul and repairs to City vehicles, including body work for department trucks and heavy equipment, and makes necessary diagnostic tests.
- Assists in maintaining and building repair equipment by welding and cutting as needed.
- Evaluates vehicle and equipment electrical systems, and makes light wiring repairs or replacements, as required.
- Inspects and maintains all hydraulic systems, as required.
- Makes service calls, performs emergency field repair to trucks and equipment, or tows derelict equipment to department garage for repair.
- Coordinates with Inventory Coordinator for usage of supplies, parts, and tools. Submits purchase requests of supplies, parts and tools as needed.
- Utilizes Fleet Maintenance software to track labor cost and enter notes on services provided.
- Maintains service area in a clean and orderly manner.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- High School graduate or GED, or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Knowledge of the accepted principles and practices involved in gasoline and diesel repair and maintenance, and familiarity with diagnostic, overhaul, and repair procedures and tools.
- Knowledge of hydraulic system functions and repair procedures.
- Ability to diagnose electrical failures and perform light wiring.
- Ability to effectively utilize a wide variety of diagnostic equipment, including various gauges and testers, and ability to safely use welding and torch equipment.
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle. Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL‑B with air brakes) within probationary period. Current CDL‑B or CDL‑A holders preferred.
Frequently lifts vehicle components and equipment of moderate to heavy weight and often works in awkward and/or cramped conditions, performing many functions in a prone, stooping, or crouched position. Prolonged, intense physical strain is not associated with normal operations.
Performs majority of duties in a garage environment, and is frequently exposed to excessive noise, grease, and dirt. Safety precautions must be observed at all times to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
Personal Work RelationshipsMaintains communications with Fleet Manager, Inventory Coordinator, Master Mechanics, and co-workers in department and in the field.
