About

the Position

The mission of the Virtual Social Science Teacher is to provide an outstanding, personalized, and effective learning experience for students by incorporating rigorous curriculum with a data‑driven and student‑centered instructional model. An Edmentum Virtual Teacher is a highly qualified, state‑certified educator primarily responsible for delivering specific course content in an online, virtual environment. Teachers provide both live and asynchronous instruction, support, guide, and manage the learning process, and handle lesson grading, feedback, parent and student messaging, and interaction with local school representatives.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a workload that supports fluctuating business needs (typically 3‑5 hours per day of live instruction with an enrollment load that corresponds to the mix of duties assigned).
  • Provide rich and engaging synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences for students.
  • Personalize learning for all students.
  • Demonstrate a belief in all students’ ability to succeed and meet high expectations.
  • Differentiate instruction based on student level of mastery.
  • Augment course content according to prescribed policies and procedures using appropriate asynchronous and synchronous tools under guidance from manager and quality coaches.
  • Maintain grade book in a timely manner, ensuring student academic integrity, make student placement and promotion decisions, and alert administrators to concerns about student performance and progress.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students on their work and progress.
  • Prepare students for high‑stakes standardized tests.
  • Respond to student messages and discussions in a timely manner within school guidelines.
  • Create learning resources to promote student learning for each course in content area.
  • Maintain synchronous and asynchronous communication with students and parents/guardians.
  • Acquaint students with their coursework and communicate course and school requirements.
  • Support student curricular and instructional issues, and basic troubleshooting in a virtual classroom environment.
  • Additional responsibilities include standalone grading services and class coverage.
  • Mentor new hires as assigned, providing onboarding, professional development, and cross‑functional support.
  • Assist with content support, curriculum feedback, and custom course creation when assigned.
  • Provide student and teacher support through certification track completion.
  • Implement success coaching by conducting video conferences and phone calls to motivate students and review progress.
  • Provide instructional coaching to teachers, including training material creation, onboarding, leadership development, and ongoing professional development.
Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
  • Active state teaching license in grades 6‑12 with Social Science/Social Studies endorsement. Preferred certifications in NC, VA, IN, and/or IA.
  • Three or more years of classroom teaching experience, including at least one year of online teaching experience.
  • Clear required background check.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology.
  • Experience teaching in an online (virtual) and/or in a brick‑and‑mortar environment.
  • Experience with online learning platforms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers to use student data for instructional decisions.
  • Receptive to receiving regular coaching from administrators and teacher trainers.
  • Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes.
