Job Summary

The General Laborer position has two main job components:
1) basic line tasks on our cereal/ingredient packaging lines, and
2) cleaning tasks. All GL’s rotate assignments throughout each workday. This is Kerry’s entry-level production job.

Key responsibilities
  • Palletize, shrink wrap, and record and certify quantities.
  • Perform cleaning duties such as sweeping and sanitizing. Cleaning duties often require working at heights using a scissor-lift. During changeovers, GL’s may work entire shifts of cleaning duties.
  • Perform varied line duties such as checking code dates, aligning bags on conveyors, refilling cardboard stock, moving product and materials with a pallet jack, filling and weighing bulk product containers, assembling boxes, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Basic Computer skills required. Prior SAP or inventory control experience is beneficial.
Qualifications and skills

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required.
  • Must be able to tolerate the above-listed physical and environmental demands of this position with or without accommodations.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Must have some work experience doing manual labor within the last 5 years.
  • Previous manufacturing experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; fingers to grip, and talk or hear. The employee periodically is required to reach with hands and arms. May at times need to stoop, kneel, or crouch. May occasionally lift heavier items with assistance. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. Pallet loading responsibilities call for the ability to lift 50-pound boxes from mid-torso height to the floor at a frequency of 20-30 times per hour. Successful candidates for General Laborer must be able to tolerate all of these conditions and stand for up to 8 or more hours per shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

General Laborers work primarily in the North and South Packaging Room and in the Warehouse. The temperature in these areas is comfortable for approximately 9 months per year. During the summer, temperatures often exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Large-scale industrial fans are available. The air in the packaging department is occasionally dusty, caused by flour and other ingredients, especially during periods of deep cleaning.

Mobility is key in this position with duties calling for the ability to climb stairs, navigate catwalks, stoop, crawl, and move quickly around a production line.
